Plasma cell infiltrate in common acquired melanocytic nevus.
نویسنده
چکیده
The presence of plasma cells in melanocytic lesions has been considered in literature as a sign of concern, when evaluated in the appropriate context. Plasma cells have been evaluated in halo nevus, but they are not frequently reported in non-halo common acquired nevus. Our claim was to study how common and frequent plasma cells are in the latter type of nevi. Therefore, we examined 280 of these nevi and selected the cases with an inflammatory infiltrate, even if mild. We then looked for plasma cells in the inflammatory infiltrate in the hematoxylin-eosin routine sections and selected 17 cases in which plasma cells (even if only occasional) could be found in the hematoxylin-eosin staining. Out of these 17, plasma cells were easily found in four cases, which were then further studied with immunohistochemistry for epithelial membrane antigen. The percentage of plasma cells varied in these four cases from 0.5% to 7%. No relation between the amount of plasma cells and either the location of the nevus or the location of the inflammatory infiltrate could be established. We conclude that the main point of this study is not to trust the presence of plasma cells as a solid criterion on its own, when evaluating a melanocytic lesion.

Background and aim: It seems that melanocytic nevi, freckle and lentigo are more common in women with melasma, and a common genetic background may exist. In this study the prevalence and number of lentigo, freckle and melanocytic nevus were compared in women with and without melasma.Materials and methods: In a case-control study, 120 women with melasma (case group) and ...
متن کاملAtypical histologic features in melanocytic nevi.
The atypical histologic features considered to be specific to dysplastic (atypical) nevi have been reported to occur in nevi that are common nevi by all other clinical and histologic features. The distribution and mutual relations among such features in nevi need to be further studied. Six histologic features (dimension > 5 mm, lentiginous proliferation, disordered nested pattern, melanocytic d...

pseudoinclusions are sometimes evident and mild nuclear pleomorphism is typical. Mitoses are either absent or extremely infrequent. By definition dendritic cells are said not to be seen in this lesion. The growth pattern often presents a plexiform appearance, fascicles of nevus cells following the dermal appendages and neurovascular bundles. Perineural or endoneural extension is a very common f...
متن کاملPigmented Skin Lesions in Children (Melanocytic Nevus, Clonal Nevus and Halo Nevus) — Symptoms and Treatment
Benign pigmented skin lesions are very common in children and can be generally classified into congenital or acquired nevi. Congenital nevi can be small, medium or large. Large nevi are usually associated with a higher risk of malignant transformation into melanoma. Acquired melanocytic nevi can be classified into typical melanocytic nevi, clonal nevi, or halo nevi. Cytological atypia can be ob...
